David Mejia-Canales is your humble host... why am I talking about myself in the third person? I'm not entirely sure.

Welcome to my home on the web.

Yep, I am a lawyer, but I'm not your lawyer! If you need a lawyer contact one, don't rely on this website as any substitute for proper legal advice.

I comment on the law a fair bit, so think of me as your friend with a law degree who has a lot of opinions about a whole lot of things that don't necessarily belong together but do, in my head anyway.

Surprising myself primarily, I managed to sit still long enough to be awarded a Juris Doctor degree from RMIT University, a Bachelor of Arts from La Trobe University and a Graduate Diploma from the Australian National University. I love studying and learning things. I'm a complete total and massive nerd.

I've differed a Master of Laws at the Australian National University, because while I absolutely love studying, it's not cheap. Having said that, I'm actively considering skipping the masters and going straight to a PhD.  Sucker for pain, I guess.

I love the law. I'm fascinated by it, how it operates, why it operates, how to make it fair and how to keep it fair. Those are the reasons why I went to law school. Ultimately, I think that banks already have enough lawyers working for them. While commercial law is the gold standard of legal practice you're sold at law school, it's not where my interests lie. Banks have enough lawyers and I'll put my skills to use elsewhere.

I do a whole lot of stuff, have a browse through my website to see what I'm up to. Work-wise, I work as an adviser for the Parliament of Victoria. Law firms were not good places to go and influence and correct injustices, the Parliament certainly is.

When I figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life I'll tell you all about it, however I'm absolutely loving my job at the moment and I want to hold on to it for as long as I can!
