Legal profession vigil for Sukumaran & Chan
The Victorian legal profession will gather to observe a one-minute silence for Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, two Australians facing the death penalty in Indonesia.
Justice Lex Lasry of the Supreme Court of Victoria will briefly address the gathering before the silence.
“We urge all our colleagues to join us to contemplate the dire predicament faced by these two young Australian men, and the abhorrence of the death penalty as a punishment in any justice system,” said Jim Peters QC, Victorian Bar Chairman.
“The death penalty harms us all. We invite all lawyers – irrespective of who you are or who you act for– to join us at the County Court to show support for two Australian citizens, the lawyers who have worked so hard to defend them and every member of society who is haunted by these events” added Katie Miller, President of the Law Institute of Victoria.
The vigil is supported by the Australian Bar Association, with President Fiona McLeod SC attending
